Logistics:

Where it’s all happening . . .

  • The Beat (opening practica, all-night milonga):  2560 9th Street, Berkeley  There is plenty of street parking available.  To get here via public transit, take BART to the Ashby station (Ashby and Martin Luther King) and then take the #9 bus west to San Pablo.  From there it is a short walk.  If you are going to the Beat from the Finnish Hall, you can walk it in 10-15 minutes (but bring a friend because the neighborhood gets sketchy in places).

  • Cellspace (daytime X-changes, theme night milonga):  2050 Bryant Street, San Francisco.  There is street parking available but check the signs.  To get here via public transit, take BART to the 16th & Mission station.  From there, it is less than a mile walking.  Alternatively, take the #33 bus to Potrero and 18th or take any bus going east on 16th and exit at Bryant.

  • Rhythm & Motion/ODC commons (Friday night events):   351 Shotwell Street, San Francisco.   Directions and public transportation information are available here  If you are going to ODC from Cellspace, you can walk it.  It’s just a half mile.

  • Lake Merritt Park (picnic):   Perkins Street & Bellevue Avenue, Oakland.  There is street parking available.  To get here via public transit, take BART to the 19th St Oakland station, which will drop you off at 19th St and Broadway in Oakland.  From there it is about a mile walking, mostly along the lake.  Alternatively, take the #12 bus north and exit at Perkins.

  • Finnish Hall (Saturday evening events):   1970 Chestnut Street, Berkeley.  There is street parking available.  To get here via public transit, take BART to North Berkeley station, walk south to University, and then walk west on University.  From the BART station, it's just a few blocks and takes 10 minutes to walk (cross streets are Chestnut and University).

  • Metronome (afterhours milonga):  1830 17th Street, San Francisco.  There is street parking available.  Directions and public transit information are available here  You can walk there from Cellspace.  It is about ¾ of a mile.

Where can I sleep for not too much?

Hotels in the Bay Area are never very cheap, but here are some reasonable options.  Be sure to check Priceline (the last option).

  • The Travelodge Central San Francisco at Market & Valencia.  Not far from the 16th & Mission BART station and close to good restaurants in the Mission.
  • Hotel Tropicana in SF.  Great location and pretty cheap – but mixed reviews, so be careful if you go this option.
  • Howard Johnson Express Inn in SF.  Not the most fun area, but you can walk to BART.
  • Best Western Civic Center Motor Inn in SF.  Not the most fun area, but you can walk to BART.
  • Berkeley Travelodge in Berkeley. Close to Downtown Berkeley BART station and good restaurants.
  • Hotel Shattuck Plaza in Berkeley.  Close to Downtown Berkeley BART station and good restaurants but a bit more expensive.
  • Priceline — Select the “Deeper discounts: Name your own price” option.  In SF, look for hotels in the Civic Center, Union Square West, or Union Square East areas.  In Berkeley, look for hotels in the Berkeley – Emeryville area.

How do I get there and get around?

You’ll want to fly into either San Francisco International or Oakland International.  Renting a car is the most convenient (check www.priceline.com and/or Budget, but there are also many public transit options.  See “Where it’s all happening” above for public transit directions.  Meanwhile, here is some helpful information:
