Music

Calling all tango Musicians and Vocalists: don't forget to bring your instrument (and vocal cords) with you to SFTX! This year we will again be under the direction of Korey Ireland. In total, we will have three orchestra rehearsals & several group sectionals, one orchestra performance on Saturday night, a Sunday music jam, and maybe even a smaller gig or two. Last year we had a lot of fun with the orchestra rehearsals, group sectionals, and jam stuff, and we played live at the Finnish Hall Milonga as well as a smaller jam band gig at the Sunday after-hours event.

The Music:
For the SFTX orchestra, Korey Ireland will provide us with specific arrangements as SFTX 2009 approaches. For the jam we will use music from Ben Bogart's jam site. If you are interested in the participating in this year's SFTX music events (orchestra and/or just the jam), let us know when you register, and we will provide you with all the necessary info.

More information about some of the songs (piano music, lyrics, etc.) can be found at todotango.com. We encourage musicians and vocalists interested in the jams/rehearsals to get familiar with the songs beforehand, as it will make our time together more productive.

The Orchestra and the Jam:
The Orchestra effort will be composed of 3 large group rehearsals as well as several smaller sectionals (from Thursday thru Saturday). During the Sunday jam, we will be playing songs "a la parrilla," as well as finding interesting ways of putting the music together, applying ideas from the exchange, and most of all, having fun!

Musical Proficiency:
For the Orchestra participation, musicians should be skilled enough to follow and develop their parts based on the specific arrangements and further direction Korey Ireland and the corresponding section leads will give you. You should be able to work well in large groups with an interest in enhancing the quality of the big group sound while adding your voice. Singers interested in participating in the orchestra will take part in a singer's sectional where you can audition for the songs you're most interested in. Korey will make the final decision wrt who sings what part.

For the Sunday jam, reasonable site reading skills, ability to improvise accompaniment, or a great ear for music will be useful. Singers will either sing together in a chorus formation. To prepare for this, you are welcome to download the music (lead sheets at www.tangojam.com, lyrics at www.todotango.com) and learn the songs to the best of your ability beforehand - in fact, we encourage all musicians to do this!

Note: If you are not sure of your level, come and try it out. If it is too far over your head, you can bow out, observe, or only join in on parts you know. This will be a low-pressure environment!
